Fuel contamination remediation standards by model

Volvo manufacturer position

Volvo Cars is a major premium brand in New Zealand with petrol, diesel, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric Recharge models. VIDA workshop manuals prescribe fuel extraction via pump module access or tank removal. Fuel contamination is excluded from warranty.

Fuel system notes

  • XC60 and XC90 diesels — common petrol-in-diesel misfuel at NZ forecourts.
  • AdBlue filler separate on diesels.
  • EX30/EX90 BEV — no fuel tank; see electric model pages.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I put the wrong fuel in my Volvo?

Do not start the engine or turn the ignition on if the lift pump may prime. Arrange recovery to an NZIFDA certified technician and follow OEM service information for tank draining and inspection.

Does Volvo warranty cover misfuel damage in New Zealand?

No. Fuel contamination is treated as misuse and is excluded under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 manufacturer remedies. Keep drainage invoices for insurance or Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal records.

Can fuel be siphoned from the filler neck on a Volvo?

OEM service information documents recovery via the fuel pump module and/or tank removal with approved equipment — not filler-neck siphoning. NZIFDA certified work follows those procedures.
