OEM access procedure

  1. Secure the vehicle with ignition OFF; do not start the engine if the wrong fuel was added.
  2. Confirm contamination type and whether the engine was cranked or driven.
  3. Relieve fuel system pressure per the OEM workshop manual.
  4. Disconnect the 12 V negative battery terminal; hybrid, PHEV, and EV models require OEM high-voltage disable first.
  5. Access the tank via the OEM fuel pump access panel or by lowering the tank per the workshop manual.
  6. Drain contaminated fuel into approved containers; dispose via a licensed collector under HSNO Act 1996 and regional council rules.
  7. Replace the fuel filter and inspect lines; flush if the engine ran on contaminated fuel.
  8. Refill with correct NZ fuel (91/95/98 petrol, diesel, or AdBlue only in the AdBlue tank), prime, leak-check, and test per OEM.

Additional notes

  • Japanese import — verify fuel grade labels and chassis code before drain

Frequently asked questions

Was the Koleos sold new in New Zealand?

Usually encountered as a used Japanese import. Remediation still follows the manufacturer workshop manual for that model.

What if I put the wrong fuel in at the forecourt?

Do not start the engine if possible. NZIFDA certified technicians drain via OEM pump or tank procedures, not filler-neck siphoning.

Who pays for misfuel repair in NZ?

Typically the vehicle owner or insurer. Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act do not treat driver misfuelling as a vehicle defect.
