Toyota Harrier

Fuel Contamination Remediation Standards

⚠️ Toyota Harrier — Moderate misfuel risk

NZ Harrier fleet is petrol or hybrid petrol. Diesel nozzle mis-selection at the forecourt is the usual error; hybrid models require Toyota HV disable before pump access.

If the engine was not started

Keep ignition off and do not cycle READY on hybrid models. Arrange OEM-method tank drain before cranking.

If the engine was started

Replace fuel filter; inspect injectors and high-pressure pump if equipped; verify hybrid fuel system integrity and HV interlocks per TIS after service.

⚠️ Toyota position — Harrier

Toyota documents fuel pump module service via under-rear-seat or cargo-floor access on most Harrier generations. Misfuelling is warranty-excluded misuse. Follow Toyota Global TIS and Techstream procedures for pressure relief, module removal, and priming.

OEM access procedure

  1. Confirm ignition OFF; do not start the engine if wrong fuel was added. Relieve fuel pressure per Toyota TIS (fuel pump relay/fuse procedure as directed).
  2. Disconnect 12 V negative battery; on hybrids, complete Toyota high-voltage disable and wait per service manual before interior work.
  3. Remove rear seat cushion or cargo trim to expose the fuel pump module access panel.
  4. Disconnect pump electrical connector and fuel line quick-connects; cap openings and ventilate to control petrol vapour per Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.
  5. Remove lock ring with OEM tool; extract pump/sender assembly without damaging the float arm.
  6. Drain contaminated fuel into approved containers; store and dispose as hazardous waste under HSNO Act 1996, Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005, and regional or district council requirements (Waste Minimisation Act 2008).
  7. Inspect tank interior; replace pump O-ring and fuel filter if contaminated fuel was run or pump was energized.
  8. Reinstall module, reconnect battery, prime fuel system, leak-check, and clear fuel-related DTCs per Techstream before road test.

Additional notes

  • Harrier shares TNGA and prior platform fuel module layouts with RAV4 and RX depending on generation — confirm chassis code before quoting access steps.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Toyota Harrier sold new in New Zealand?

Yes — Toyota New Zealand offers Harrier hybrid models alongside a large used-import fleet. Fuel procedures follow Toyota TIS for the VIN, whether NZ-new or JDM import.

What should I do if I put diesel in my Harrier?

Harrier is petrol or hybrid petrol only. Do not start the engine. Drain via Toyota’s fuel pump access procedure and replace the fuel filter before refilling with the correct petrol grade.

Does Toyota warranty cover Harrier misfuel damage?

No. Incorrect fuel is customer misuse excluded under warranty. Recovery costs typically fall to the owner or insurer; Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and Fair Trading Act 1986 do not treat driver misfuelling as a vehicle defect.
