⚠️ CRITICAL: Toyota Hilux Diesel Misfuel
The Toyota Hilux is one of the most commonly misfuelled vehicles in New Zealand. If petrol has been added to a diesel Hilux:
- Do NOT start the engine
- Do NOT turn ignition to RUN (priming pump activates)
- Leave the vehicle where it is
- Contact NZIFDA certified technician immediately
⚠️ Toyota Position - Hilux
Toyota prescribes fuel tank removal as the procedure for accessing Hilux fuel tank contents.
The Hilux does not have a fuel pump access panel. Full tank drop is required for fuel contamination remediation. Fuel contamination is classified as misuse and excluded from Toyota warranty.

NZIFDA Recommended Method
✓ Method B: Full Tank Drop/Removal
This is the ONLY approved method for Toyota Hilux.
The Hilux does not have a fuel pump access panel. Toyota prescribes complete fuel tank removal to access tank contents.
✗ Filler Neck Extraction
Not Approved - The Hilux filler neck contains anti-siphon devices (ball valve, mesh screen) that prevent and can be damaged by extraction equipment. This is not a Toyota-prescribed method.
Toyota-Prescribed Procedure
“Fuel Tank Removal (Hilux)
- Remove fuel pump relay, start engine until stall to relieve pressure
- Disconnect negative battery terminal
- Remove bed liner and access fuel sender connector
- Raise vehicle on hoist
- Remove exhaust heat shields as required
- Disconnect fuel filler hose and vent hose
- Disconnect fuel lines (fuel feed, return)
- Support fuel tank with transmission jack
- Remove fuel tank strap bolts
- Lower fuel tank
- Drain contaminated fuel to approved container
- Remove fuel pump/sender for tank inspection
Procedure Steps (NZIFDA Standard)
- Secure vehicle in safe location, ignition OFF, keys removed
- Assess contamination type - confirm petrol in diesel or vice versa
- Relieve fuel system pressure per Toyota procedure
- Disconnect battery negative terminal
- Raise vehicle on four-post hoist
- Remove underbody protection panels
- Disconnect filler neck and vent hoses
- Disconnect fuel lines at tank (cap open lines)
- Disconnect fuel pump/sender electrical connector
- Support tank with transmission jack
- Remove tank strap mounting bolts
- Lower tank and remove from vehicle
- Drain all contaminated fuel to approved container
- Remove fuel pump module for tank inspection
- Inspect and flush tank interior
- Replace fuel filter
- Reinstall tank with new seals per torque specifications
- Refill with correct fuel type
- Prime system and test for leaks
- Start engine and verify operation
- Test drive and final inspection
⚠️ If Engine Was Started on Contaminated Fuel
If the Hilux diesel engine was started or driven with petrol contamination:
- Contaminated fuel has circulated through high-pressure fuel system
- High-pressure fuel pump may be damaged
- Fuel injectors may require replacement
- Fuel rails and lines may require flushing or replacement
- Cost can exceed $10,000+ for full fuel system replacement
NZIFDA certified technicians will assess damage and advise on required repairs.
Dual Fuel Tank Configurations
Some Hilux variants, particularly long-range models, may have auxiliary fuel tanks:
- Check for presence of secondary tank
- Both tanks must be drained if contamination has spread
- Transfer system between tanks may have circulated contaminated fuel
Parts Typically Required
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Fuel Filter | Always replace - Toyota Genuine recommended |
| Fuel Tank Seal/Gasket | Replace if disturbed |
| Fuel Pump Module O-ring | Replace on reassembly |
| Fuel Line Connectors | Inspect, replace if damaged |
If engine was run: Additional parts may include fuel pump, injectors, fuel rails depending on damage assessment.
Estimated Labour Time
| Scenario | Typical Hours |
|---|---|
| Tank drop, drain, filter replacement (engine NOT started) | 2.5 - 4 hours |
| Full system flush (engine started briefly) | 4 - 6 hours |
| Fuel system component replacement | 6+ hours (varies by damage) |
Labour times are estimates and may vary based on vehicle condition, model year, and extent of contamination.
Insurance Documentation
For insurance claims, NZIFDA certified technicians provide:
- Contamination assessment report
- Justification for tank drop method (no access panel on Hilux)
- Parts replaced with Toyota part numbers
- Contaminated fuel disposal certificate
- Post-repair inspection confirmation
Sample Justification Statement:
“The Toyota Hilux does not have a fuel pump access panel. Toyota prescribes fuel tank removal as the method for accessing fuel tank contents. Anti-siphon devices in the filler neck prevent alternative extraction methods. Full tank drop was performed in accordance with Toyota service manual procedure.”
