Fuel Contamination Remediation Standards

⚠️ Ford Motor Company Position

Ford’s warranty excludes “damage from using fuel other than recommended.”

Ford Workshop Manual prescribes fuel tank removal and/or fuel pump access as the procedures for accessing fuel tank contents. NZIFDA certified technicians follow Ford service documentation.

Ford Fuel Pump Access

Ford fuel pump access varies significantly by model:

  • Ford Ranger (current) - No access panel, tank drop required
  • Ford Everest - Tank drop typically required
  • Ford Focus, Fiesta - Access panel under rear seat
  • Ford Mustang - Access varies by generation
  • Transit/Transit Custom - Access depends on configuration

⚠️ Ford Ranger - Most Misfuelled Vehicle in NZ

The Ford Ranger is consistently one of the most misfuelled vehicles in New Zealand. The diesel variants use high-pressure common rail injection that is extremely sensitive to petrol contamination:

  • Do NOT start the engine if wrong fuel is suspected
  • Do NOT turn ignition to RUN - low-pressure pump may prime
  • Ford Ranger has no fuel pump access panel - tank drop is required
  • If engine was run, full fuel system flush and possible injector replacement required

Ford EcoBoost Engines

Ford’s EcoBoost petrol engines use direct injection and turbocharging. While more tolerant of minor diesel contamination than diesel engines are of petrol, EcoBoost engines still require:

  • Complete fuel system drain if diesel added
  • Fuel filter replacement
  • Inspection of fuel injectors
  • System flush before refilling with correct fuel
