Fuel Contamination Remediation Standards

⚠️ Honda Position

Honda prescribes fuel tank removal and/or fuel pump access as the procedures for accessing fuel tank contents.

Honda warranty excludes damage from fuel contamination as vehicle misuse. Honda Service Express (i-HDS) documents specific procedures that NZIFDA certified technicians follow.

Honda Fuel Pump Access

Most Honda models feature excellent fuel pump access panels under the rear seat:

  • Civic, Accord, Jazz/Fit - Access under rear seat
  • CR-V, HR-V - Access via cargo area or seat
  • Odyssey - Access under floor in passenger area

Honda Fuel System Notes

Honda vehicles in New Zealand are predominantly petrol-powered. Key considerations:

  • No diesel models - Honda does not sell diesel vehicles in NZ, reducing misfuel risk
  • Hybrid systems - e:HEV models still use petrol and can be contaminated
  • Direct injection - Newer models (1.5T, 2.0T) use direct injection, more sensitive to contamination

Diesel-in-Petrol Contamination

While less common, adding diesel to a Honda petrol engine requires:

  • Complete fuel system drain
  • Fuel filter replacement
  • System flush before refilling with petrol
  • Direct injection models may require injector inspection

✓ Honda Hybrid (e:HEV) Systems

Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system uses a petrol engine as a generator with electric motor drive. The petrol tank can still be contaminated. If fuel contamination is suspected, do not start the vehicle as the engine will activate during system initialization.
