Smart manufacturer position
Smart is now focused on battery electric #1 and #3 models distributed in New Zealand through Mercedes-Benz channels. Legacy petrol fortwo and forfour remain in the used market. EQ Smarts have no fuel tank; petrol models follow Mercedes-Benz Group fuel access guidance.
Fuel system notes
- Current NZ-new Smarts are BEV — misfuel not applicable.
- Legacy fortwo petrol — small tank, module access per WIS.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I put the wrong fuel in my Smart?
Do not start the engine or turn the ignition on if the lift pump may prime. Arrange recovery to an NZIFDA certified technician and follow OEM service information for tank draining and inspection.
Does Smart warranty cover misfuel damage in New Zealand?
No. Fuel contamination is treated as misuse and is excluded under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 manufacturer remedies. Keep drainage invoices for insurance or Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal records.
Can fuel be siphoned from the filler neck on a Smart?
OEM service information documents recovery via the fuel pump module and/or tank removal with approved equipment — not filler-neck siphoning. NZIFDA certified work follows those procedures.
