⚠️ Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross — Moderate misfuel risk
NZ Eclipse Cross is primarily petrol. Risk is diesel dispensed into the petrol tank at a distracted fill-up, or petrol contamination of diesel on mislabeled imports. PHEV models add high-voltage safety steps unrelated to the fuel tank.
If the engine was not started
Do not cycle the ignition. Have a certified technician drain the tank using Mitsubishi-prescribed access before any start attempt.
If the engine was started
If the engine ran on wrong fuel, expect fuel filter replacement, possible injector inspection, and catalytic converter concerns if petrol was diluted with diesel or vice versa — scope per OEM diagnostics.
⚠️ Mitsubishi position — Eclipse Cross
Mitsubishi prescribes fuel pump module service via the access panel when equipped, or tank lowering per workshop manual. Misfueling is excluded from warranty as misuse. Follow Mitsubishi Motors service information for the VIN.

OEM access procedure
- Do not start the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable per Mitsubishi service information.
- Relieve fuel system pressure using the OEM-specified procedure (often fuse removal for the fuel pump, then crank without starting).
- Access the fuel pump module via the OEM fuel pump access panel when equipped, or lower the tank per workshop manual if no panel exists.
- Disconnect fuel lines using quick-connect procedures in the service manual; contain vapours and bond/ground per HSWA 2015 and Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.
- Drain remaining fuel from the tank using approved recovery equipment; label containers for hazardous waste handling under HSNO Act 1996 and EPA NZ requirements for hazardous substances
- Inspect the tank, pump, and sender for contamination; replace the fuel filter per OEM guidance.
- Reinstall components, reconnect lines, and prime the fuel system before a supervised first start per OEM instructions.
Additional notes
- NZ market does not offer Eclipse Cross diesel.

Frequently asked questions
What if I put diesel in my Eclipse Cross petrol tank?
Do not start the engine. Diesel in a petrol direct-injection turbo engine can damage the fuel system if run. Drain and flush per Mitsubishi OEM procedures.
Does the Eclipse Cross PHEV have a fuel tank?
Yes — PHEV variants carry petrol for the onboard generator/engine. Misfuel procedures target that tank; high-voltage safety is additional.
Should I siphon fuel from the filler neck on my Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?
NZIFDA certified repair facilities use Mitsubishi OEM-prescribed fuel module or tank access only. Filler-neck siphoning is not a certified misfuel recovery process in New Zealand.
