Mitsubishi Outlander

Fuel Contamination Remediation Standards

⚠️ Mitsubishi Outlander — Moderate misfuel risk

Petrol in diesel imports is high risk. PHEV adds HV steps. NZ-new petrol and PHEV: diesel in petrol tank is the usual forecourt error.

If the engine was not started

Do not crank; on PHEV disable HV first; drain via OEM access.

If the engine was started

Filters and possible injector inspection; PHEV HV checks after fuel service.

⚠️ Mitsubishi position — Outlander

Mitsubishi classifies misfuelling as misuse excluded from warranty. Follow Mitsubishi workshop manual for pump access or tank lowering.

OEM access procedure

  1. Secure the vehicle with ignition OFF; do not start the engine if the wrong fuel was added.
  2. Confirm contamination type and whether the engine was cranked or driven.
  3. Relieve fuel system pressure per the OEM workshop manual.
  4. Disconnect the 12 V negative battery terminal; hybrid, PHEV, and EV models require OEM high-voltage disable first.
  5. Access the tank via the OEM fuel pump access panel or by lowering the tank per the workshop manual.
  6. Drain contaminated fuel into approved containers; dispose via a licensed collector under HSNO Act 1996 and regional council rules.
  7. Replace the fuel filter and inspect lines; flush if the engine ran on contaminated fuel.
  8. Refill with correct NZ fuel (91/95/98 petrol, diesel, or AdBlue only in the AdBlue tank), prime, leak-check, and test per OEM.

Additional notes

  • Outlander PHEV shares fuel tank with petrol engine — separate from traction battery cooling

Frequently asked questions

Does the Outlander PHEV have a petrol tank?

Yes. The PHEV still uses petrol for the engine. Misfuel procedures target that tank; high-voltage safety is additional.

What if I put petrol in my diesel Outlander import?

Do not start the engine. Drain per Mitsubishi OEM procedure and inspect the high-pressure system if the pump was primed.

Is misfuel covered under Mitsubishi warranty in NZ?

No. Wrong fuel is customer misuse and is excluded from warranty.
